Everyone is born as free and equal in the eyes of the law. Singapore is a multi-racial society. We have Chinese, Malays, Indians and Caucasians.

Everyday when we say the pledge we repeat the same phrase over and over again 'regardless of race, language or religion'. Racism is a very sensitive topic in Sinagpore. This can be seen from how the bloggers who displayed racism in the blogs and how severely they were punished. Once a year, we commerate racial harmony day.

All these examples, show how much the government values racial harmony in Sinagpore. I feel that the government is right in doing so. A common understanding between races is important to resolve conflicts. Everyone knows what would happen if the racial peace in Singapore was disrupted. The older generation has experienced it and the younger generation have read aboutit. Even though we may have not actually experienced what happens when racial peace is disrupted, we know how destructive it can be. I believe that the Governmant learnt from the past and is doing all it can to prevent history from repeating itself.

Everybody should realise that every individual should have equal rights and no one should be discriminated against others of different race and skin colour.

We have seen how racism has torn countries apart. Like for example the Palestinians and Jews in Isreal.

Another very important example would be World War 2, millions of Jews were killed, their only crime being that they were Jews. We must never allow Singapore to be put in this situation where one race hates the other to the extent of wishing to annihilate the other race all together. If this happens (pray that it never will), it will be the downfall of Singapore.

If in Singapore, our multi-racial country, a single race believes itself to be superior to all other races, our country will fall apart. We must never allow this to happen!!

Today, Singaporeans, regardless of race, language or religion, are able to live together in harmony. It is not unusual to see a temple beside a mosque or church. We sometimes even embrace other cultures, learning about them and experiencing them. We especially embrace other cultures when it comes to food! (:

However, we must never ever take the peace and harmony, that Singapore now enjoys, for granted!
